The forced immobility of indefinite immigration detention in the UK: How Refugee Tales responds with particular reference to The Refugee's Tale as told to Patience Agbabi

For women who have travelled to the UK, the loss they have experienced and the trauma of their journey is compounded by the dehumanising nature of detention inflicted upon them in the UK. Detained indefinitely, they are situated outside state  protection and denied the rights that citizens enjoy. Immigration detention represents a forced immobility. Their loss of agency, the invisibility inflicted upon them by the geography of their detention and the impact on family life will be examined. Further, the effect of being detained or the impact of detention of the partner, husband or father upon family units will be considered. Gatwick Detainees Welfare Group and Refugee Tales have worked with women with lived experience of detention and this talk will consider how the project has helped those who have been detained to share their experiences. Patience Agbabi will read 'The Refugee's Tale' and reflect on the collaboration that enabled the tale to be shared whilst the subject remained safe and anonymous.
